Athletic and Functional Taping

What is Athletic taping?

Athletic taping involves applying adhesive tape to the skin in specific patterns to provide support, stability, and protection to muscles, joints, and ligaments during physical activity. This type of taping is commonly used in sports and athletic settings to help prevent or manage injuries, improve biomechanics, and support the rehabilitation of certain conditions. Athletic taping can be performed using various types of tape, and the specific taping method depends on the goals of the taping and the area being treated.

What is functional taping?

Functional taping involves applying elastic tape to the skin in specific patterns to provide support, facilitate movement, and enhance performance during physical activities. This type of taping is commonly referred to as kinesiology taping or elastic taping. Unlike rigid athletic taping, which restricts movement, functional taping is designed to allow a full range of motion while providing support to muscles and joints. The tape used in functional taping is often made of elastic material, allowing it to stretch and conform to the body

What are the goals of athletic and functional taping?

Goals of athletic taping include:

  • Injury Prevention: Taping may help reduce the risk of injuries, especially in areas prone to sprains or strains.

  • Support and Stability: Taping can provide support to weakened or injured joints, enhancing stability during movement.

  • Pain Relief: In some cases, taping may help alleviate pain by reducing stress on affected structures.

  • Swelling Control: Taping techniques may assist in managing swelling or edema.

Goals of functional taping include:

  • Muscle and Joint Support: Functional taping is used to provide support to muscles and joints without restricting natural movement. The tape is applied in specific patterns to enhance proprioception (awareness of body position) and support the targeted area.

  • Facilitation of Movement: Unlike traditional rigid tape, functional taping is intended to allow a full range of motion.

  • Pain Management: Functional taping is often used to manage pain associated with musculoskeletal conditions. The tape may influence pain perception by providing sensory input and support to the affected area.

  • Edema and Swelling Reduction: The tape's elastic properties may help facilitate lymphatic drainage and reduce swelling in certain conditions. The tape is applied with tension to create a lifting effect on the skin, which may promote better circulation.

  • Postural Correction: Functional taping can be applied to encourage improved posture and body alignment. It may be used to provide feedback to the body, promoting awareness of correct movement patterns.

  • Sports Performance: Athletes often use functional taping to support specific muscle groups, enhance performance, and manage minor injuries.
