Custom Orthotics

What are orthotics?

Orthotics are devices that are designed to support or correct the alignment of a body part, typically the feet, to improve biomechanical function and alleviate symptoms related to musculoskeletal or gait abnormalities. They are commonly used to address issues with the feet, ankles, and lower extremities.

What is the difference between

custom and prefabricated orthotics?

There are two main types of orthotics:

  • Custom Orthotics:

    • Custom orthotics are individually crafted to meet the specific needs of an individual based on a thorough assessment conducted by a healthcare professional.

    • The process typically involves taking molds or scans of the patient's feet, assessing their gait, and considering any specific biomechanical issues.

    • They are designed to provide targeted support, correct alignment, and improve overall foot function.

  • Over-the-Counter Orthotics:

    • Over-the-counter (OTC) orthotics are pre-made, non-custom devices that are available for purchase without a prescription.

    • These devices are designed to provide general support and can be used by individuals with mild to moderate foot issues or those seeking additional cushioning and comfort.

    • OTC orthotics may be found in retail stores and come in various sizes and shapes to accommodate different foot types.

Can custom orthotics help my condition?

Custom orthotics can be beneficial for a variety of musculoskeletal and biomechanical conditions involving the feet, ankles, and lower extremities. Some common conditions for which custom orthotics may be recommended:

  • Flat Feet (Pes Planus):

    • Custom orthotics can provide arch support and help distribute weight evenly across the foot, addressing issues associated with flat feet.

  • High Arches (Pes Cavus):

    • Arch supports in custom orthotics can help alleviate excessive pressure on the ball and heel of the foot for individuals with high arches.

  • Overpronation and Supination:

    • Overpronation (inward rolling of the foot) and supination (outward rolling of the foot) can be addressed with custom orthotics designed to correct gait abnormalities and provide stability.

  • Plantar Fasciitis:

    • Custom orthotics may be used to support the arch and relieve strain on the plantar fascia, which is often associated with heel pain.

  • Achilles Tendonitis:

    • Orthotics can be designed to provide proper support and reduce stress on the Achilles tendon.

  • Shin Splints:

    • Orthotics may help reduce excessive stress on the shin muscles and alleviate pain associated with shin splints.

  • Bunions (Hallux Valgus):

    • Custom orthotics can be used to improve foot alignment and reduce pressure on bunions, potentially relieving pain and discomfort.

  • Metatarsalgia:

    • Orthotics may help redistribute pressure on the metatarsal bones and alleviate pain associated with metatarsalgia.

  • Knee Pain:

    • Conditions such as patellofemoral pain syndrome or iliotibial band syndrome may benefit from custom orthotics that help align the lower extremities.

  • Hip Pain:

    • Hip pain related to poor foot mechanics or gait abnormalities may be addressed by custom orthotics.

  • Lower Back Pain:

    • Custom orthotics can influence biomechanics and alignment, potentially reducing stress on the lower back and alleviating pain.

  • Sports Injuries:

    • Athletes with specific biomechanical issues or foot structure abnormalities may use custom orthotics to enhance performance and prevent injuries.

It's important to note that the effectiveness of custom orthotics depends on an accurate diagnosis and proper prescription by a healthcare professional. These professionals will conduct a thorough assessment, including gait analysis, foot structure evaluation, and consideration of the individual's symptoms, to determine the most appropriate intervention. Custom orthotics are designed to be worn inside supportive footwear and are part of a comprehensive treatment plan that may include other interventions such as exercises, chiropractic, and physical therapy.

Who provides custom orthotics at MHP?

Dr. Paul Wiggins and Dr. Matt Wentzell provide biomechanical assessment and custom orthotic casting. Appointments with either of them can be booked here. If any of MHP’s other healthcare practitioners think custom orthotics would be a benefit to recovering from your injury, they will gladly refer you to Dr. Wiggins or Dr. Wentzell for an assessment/casting.
